Individuals who meet one or more of the following requirements:

  1. Engaged in the profession of human resources management at an exempt level for at least three years;
  2. Certified by the Human Resource Certification Institute;
  3. Faculty members holding an assistant, associate or full professor rank in human resource management or any of its specialized functions at an accredited college or university and have at least three years of experience at this level of teaching;
  4. Full-time consultants with at least three years experience in the field of human resource management;
  5. Full-time attorneys with at least three years experience in counseling and advising clients on matters relating to the human resources profession.


Individuals in non-exempt human resources management positions and those who do not meet the requirements for professional membership. Associate members must demonstrate a bona fide interest in human resource management and the mission of the State Chapter.

Associate members may not vote and may not hold office in the State Chapter.

Young Professional/Affliliate

SHRM Hawaii initiated a Young Professional (YP) to mirror SHRM National's program that provides opportunities and builds community for the next generation of HR leadership. YP focuses on HR professionals in the early stages of their career (1-3 years' experience) and the objectives are to provide assistance in regards to career growth, strengthen relationships between executives and YPs through a mentorship program and create an opportunity for YPs to gather and discuss successes and challenges in their roles.
